The Southern Coast of Oregon is sometimes referred to as the “banana belt” because of the long growing season and ample sunshine during the Spring through Fall.  Temperatures June through October average 70 degrees during the day and 50 at night with pleasant ocean breezes and just enough rain to minimize the possibility of wildfires which threaten the other Western states.  In the winter it seldom gets below freezing because the proximity of the ocean moderates the weather.

Elk, deer, black bear, cougar, bobcat, turkey and eagles are found in the area.  Deer wander through town and graze on residential lawns. Many residents report seeing elk playing on the beach early in the morning.   Jetboats take visitors on day trips 100 miles up the Rogue River to areas not accessible by any other means.  The scenery and wildlife viewing are spectacular.

You can walk or ride horses on pristine beaches without seeing another person. Search for agates, fish in the surf, gather clams, have a picnic or clam bake. Watch for whales and sea lions as they migrate along the coast within a few hundred yards of the beach.  Watch the awesome forces of nature as waves from winter storms crash against offshore rock formations.
